Turing’s Biological Philosophy: Morphogenesis, Mechanisms and Organicism
نویسندگان
چکیده
Alan M. Turing’s last published work and some posthumously manuscripts were dedicated to the development of his theory organic pattern formation. In “The Chemical Basis Morphogenesis” (1952), he provided an elaborated mathematical formulation origins biological form that had been first proposed by Sir D’Arcy Wendworth Thompson in On Growth Form (1917/1942). While arguably most mathematically detailed systematically ambitious effort, morphogenetical writings also thematically self-contained least philosophically explored part work. We dedicate our inquiry reasons implications choice topic viewpoint. will probe for possible factors go beyond availability acquaintance with Form. these grounds, we explore how what extent morphogenesis actually ties concept mechanistic computation. Notably, Thompson’s pioneering ‘structuralism’ was organicist outlook explicitly critical Darwinian approaches popular cyberneticist contemporaries—and partly used Turing himself proto-connectionist models learning. Resolving this apparent dichotomy, demonstrate quest explanations organisation emerges nature leaves room a non-mechanist view nature.

Cellular mechanisms of morphogenesis.
The development and functions of multicellular organisms ely on the local activities of cells and molecules. Advances in icroscopy have made it possible to visualize directly dynamic ssemblies of cells as they grow, divide, and morph into the recgnizable structures that make up a fully formed animal. However, he rules that determine how cells interact, and how these interacions produce the elab...

Forming an epithelium requires a mechanism for generating and maintaining a well-ordered array of cells. Now, two groups have uncovered a surprising strategy fororganizingcellswithinanepitheliumandcounteractingovercrowding. Marinari et al. (2012) and Eisenhoffer et al. (2012) show that cells are stochastically extruded fromdenselypacked regionsofgrowing tissues.Although active extrusionofapopto...

Western science rests on the philosophical foundation of materialist monism, according to which only physical matter exists and therefore only physical matter can be known. Furthermore, matter is known to us only through the sense organs or indirectly through instruments. Consequently valid knowledge can only be derived from a logical interpretation of sensory experience. Materialist monism (he...
متن کاملTube Morphogenesis Making and Shaping Biological Tubes
Many organs are composed of epithelial tubes that transport vital fluids. Such tubular organs develop in many different ways and generate tubes of widely varying sizes and structures, but always with the apical epithelial surface lining the lumen. We describe recent progress in several diverse cell culture and genetic models of tube morphogenesis, which suggest apical membrane biogenesis, vesic...
